Thought of the day.

What is the point of college? To spend thousands of dollars to get a little scrap of paper that says you can do something? What if you already have the knowledge that you apparently need to gain? What's the use of math and english and other assorted types of general ed., if they serve no real purpose later in life? I don't even know...

  1. General education I'd think.

  2. what if you don't have that knowledge already? and how could you prove to someone that you did without them wasting time and money employing you to find out you didn't?

with some jobs, experience as an intern is better than a degree, other you simply NEED the degree first or you won't know what the hell is going on

  3. Exactly!? Why don't people make Fake Diploma's instead of Fake I.D's -.-

  4. As long as you have a general education you are fine, anything you really need to know you learn from experience.

  5. I personally agree. I don't see the point. In the time you take to get your degree, some other guy is spending long, hard hours working and getting the experience. Experience is like gold. Of course if you're competing for a job against people who don't have a degree and have equally no experience, you're a shoe-in. But it comes down to no experience + degree vs. no degree + experience, it seems like employers tend to favor the latter. +follow

  7. college is solely for the degree and contacts in my opinion. i learn more everyday on the internet reading than i do in school and i go 4 days a week.

  8. College is so expensive nowadays! Harvard costs around $60,000 per year. Talk about pricey.

  9. Gen Eds are completely useless. We have all of highschool to become "well rounded", most of us in college are there because we already know what we want to do!

Just let us take the classes we need to get a job, and stop forcing us to pay for the extra crap we don't need.

  10. You can get all the education you need through the internet. college is only to go for a piece of paper. Like a certification, that's all. we spend 40 plus thousand dollars just for that :/

  11. I found this out as soon as I spent 40k on school....dammit.

  12. In a lot of cases the piece of paper is to prove you have the knowledge so your potential employers know you're legit. Unless your in the arts and humanitarian subjects, in which case you just wasted a whole lot of money to be a pretentious dick.

  13. I agree whole-heartedly, that is why I lie on every resume and say I have degrees which I actually don't have. Who is actually going to go through the trouble of fact checking that?

  15. Not sure if I agree, definitely on the individual school and classes.

  16. I asked that to my parents one time and they said that having a college degree just tells employers that you are competent and capable of learning things. I just roll with it.

  18. Some trades require degrees now, like teaching and stuff. For me though, I wanna make music and am using college as a way to utilize different things to improve me makin mah music. I don't have to go to college, but I figured it would help me grow as a person and polish my skills before stepping out in the real world.

  20. it's like insurance for whoever wants to employ you. less risk in hiring an individual with a Master's over someone with only a GED.

School just shows employers how well we can handle bullshit and an indicator of competency.

  21. i just could not agree more

  22. Agreed. Some degrees do require more info though.

  23. Yeah, I'm on the fence about continuing my education too.

  24. i know what you are saying and i felt the same way when I was in school. I see it as part of the process, you are taking the time to do what is needed to continue. it shows you care and are determined. id hire someone who took the time to get the education and proved this was important to him/her. if you want something bad enough you will spend the time to do it right.

  25. its hard to explain and a very debatable topic

  26. I hear you there. 65K for a half-assed education taught by TA's instead of PhD's.

  27. i agree with wintermute.
also some jobs require the education like if you wanna be a doctor.

  28. Apparently there are some things that can only be taught at college. Still not sure what that is yet though.
